A Doubling in Size
In 1933, the staff of The Traveler published the paper's first eight-page edition as a broadsheet and included stories about the university's tenth-place ranking among colleges of the North Central Association, the establishment of a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at the campus, and a history of sports at the university.
Editor Ernie Deane wrote: "Whether or not anybody attempted eight pages of Traveler before, nobody around the office seemed to know. But the whole typewriter pounding and selling aggregation prayed a silent prayer that this edition 'go over' with readers."
The Traveler had published an eight-page tabloid issue for April Fools' Day in 1931, but this was the first eight-pager otherwise. And Deane's prayers were apparently heard. The paper proved a success, and future volumes of The Traveler included frequent eight-page issues.
In 1936, The Traveler experienced a different sort of doubling. The UA Publication Board approved changing the publication schedule from weekly to twice weekly, with editions on Tuesday and Friday. The size of the paper, however, was scaled back from broadsheet to tabloid in an effort to keep printing costs in check. The paper remained tabloid until the 1990s.
